Historically, the bear was not just a creature of the wild for the Norse people. It was a spiritual guide, a symbol of strength, wisdom, and the delicate balance between the natural world and the spirit realm.
Among the ancient Germanic peoples who spread from Scandinavia to most of Europe from the 19th century BC, bears were considered an emblem of strength, courage and invincibility, the totemic animal par excellence.
Bears were often seen as a symbol of motherhood. They are known for being fiercely protective of their young, and their milk is particularly rich. Celts venerated the bear goddess, Artio. Like a mother bear they believed she offered protection.
